Preparing myself into workforce one more time

In the next month, I will be joining a new company as Solution Analyst, the role I know nothing about. I know there will be lots of unknowns so here I am navigating what I should do to survive for my next role.

1. Technical Skills

Based on discussions I had with some people (friend, soon to be leader, and soon to be manager) I will be designing databases, APIs and user flow, though it still vague. So I guess, I will learn Application Design for Data-Driven Application and a little UX Design

2. Non Technical Skills

Increase attention span

I remember how hard it was to have a long meeting session in my past role. Often times, in the second 10 minutes of the session, i lost all of the conversations. This, sometimes lead me to chaos in the next day since I can’t remember of what I should do. To achieve this skill, I will consume more long-form contents such as book and long course and take a note from them.

Improve reading comprehension

In my past role, I was leading a team where I need to manage manpower and tasks of team. To do that, I need to understand the product requirements which required me to read lots of documents and discussion. Often times, I just scanned the documents without actually undertood the point of documents. This could lead me to design and assign task incorrectly. To avoid this, I will try to ACTIVEly read books and undertand the point of the book.

Stress Management

In my past role, Often times I had to meet people in power. This kind of situation sometimes made me feel overwhelmed and stressed. I even feel ache in my stomach due to stress. I should learn how to manage stress for the next role.

Communication

In the last company when I was still a developer, my peers told me that the way I speak was better than my peers. I think it’s true, but after step up to lead a team, I found that my commucation skill still lacks. I still don’t know how and where to improve this. Will think about it later.

3. Being fit physically

I had been overlooked this aspect this whole time. I have been noticing that I have little willpower, fighting spirit, and energy. Some might say it’s just who we are, but deep down inside I know it’s all because I have weak physique which affects my mental power. Started last week, I tried to do a light home work out at least 10 minutes a day to keep my physique fit and to prove myself I too can build a good habit and be discpline.

By having a fit body, I think I can survive to work for long hours daily and get recovered quickly. I will always do home work out no matter what the circumtances at least 10 minutes a day and 3 times a week.

Bottom Line

So in short, there are 3 aspects I will improve

  1. Technical Skill: learn data-driven app design, ux theories and its application
  2. Non Technical Skill: active reading by making a note and try summarize them, that way I will improve reading comprehension and increase my attention span
  3. Physical Fitness: start a home workout routine and increase my energy level

How will my schedule be?

  • 08 am - 12 pm: daddy time and lunch break
  • 12 pm - 01 pm: home workout
